Lake Norman Boat Rentals: A Local's Guide

Most of our guests rent a boat for at least one day of their stay — it's the single best upgrade a Lake Norman trip has. Here's what we tell every guest who asks, condensed from years of the same questions.

What to rent

• Pontoon / tritoon. The right answer for 90% of groups: stable, roomy, easy to drive, perfect for coves and swimming. Tritoons handle main-channel chop better.

• Ski/wake boats. For tubing, wakeboarding, and surfing. More boat to handle — best if someone in your group has real experience.

• Jet skis. Rented by the hour around the lake. A blast, but budget-minded groups get more lake time per dollar from a pontoon.

• Kayaks & paddleboards. Several of our homes include them (check the listing's amenities), and Lake Norman State Park rents them seasonally.

The rules that actually matter

• Who can drive. North Carolina requires a boating-safety certification for operators born after January 1, 1988 driving anything over 10 horsepower. The course is online and takes a few hours — sort it before the trip, not the morning of.

• Life jackets. One properly fitted USCG-approved vest per person on board, worn by kids under 13 while underway. Bring correctly sized vests for young children — rental fleets stock mostly adult sizes.

• No-wake zones. Marked by white buoys, mostly in coves and around marinas. Idle through them — wardens patrol summer weekends and the fines are real.

• Weekends get busy. Summer Saturdays on the main channel are choppy and crowded by noon. Go out early, tuck into coves mid-day, and you'll have a far better time.

Renting when you're staying with us

When you book one of our homes, boat-rental recommendations are sent automatically with your confirmation — including outfits that deliver the boat to a nearby launch or, at many homes, straight to the dock you're staying on.

Most of our lakefront homes let you tie a rented boat to the dock overnight (cleats are provided — note that covered boat-lift slips are usually reserved). Check your home's listing details or just ask us; we answer fast.

Budget notes

Expect pontoon rentals to run in the hundreds per day, with rates climbing on summer weekends and dropping noticeably on weekdays and in shoulder season. Half-day rentals exist but a full day disappears faster than you'd think. Book one to two weeks ahead for summer weekends — same-day almost never works in July.
